{"id":1262,"date":"2024-01-25T07:11:48","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T14:11:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/?p=1262"},"modified":"2024-09-02T14:35:59","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T20:35:59","slug":"a-voice-in-the-clouds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/?p=1262","title":{"rendered":"A Voice in the Clouds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was an overcast day, the gray clouds mirroring my mood from the news I had just received early that morning.\u00a0 My mother called from Kansas to tell me that her father, Grandpa Wallace Fleming, had just passed on.\u00a0 As I lay in bed gazing out the window at the colorless clouds thinking of him, a perfectly circular opening appeared in the gloom through which I could see brilliant blue sky.\u00a0 At that moment I seemed to hear grandpa speaking to me and telling me he had &#8220;made it over&#8221; and all was well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1263\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Maywood-Church-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1263\" class=\"wp-image-1263\" src=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Maywood-Church-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maywood Community Church, Kansas where Grandpa Fleming attended.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was March, 1978 and I was living in Boulder, Colorado serving as a juvenile probation officer and working on my Master\u2019s degree in Public Administration with specialization in criminal justice.\u00a0 In August of 1981 after I moved to New Mexico, I visited the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos which had an impressive collection of Native American and Hispanic art and artifacts.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.millicentrogers.org\/pages\/mission\">https:\/\/www.millicentrogers.org\/pages\/mission<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/millicent-rogers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1264 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/millicent-rogers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/millicent-rogers.jpg 315w, https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/millicent-rogers-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/millicent-rogers-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/a>I was drawn to a particular Hopi pot and discovered quite to my surprise a depiction of what were said were &#8220;spirit holes&#8221;&#8211;circular openings in the clouds through which the spirits pass through.\u00a0 In total amazement, I realized\u00a0 that my personal experience was not singular and indeed was confirmed by at least one other culture, in this case the Hopi Pueblo people of Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>From a strictly meteorological point of view, there are some possible scientific explanations:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/grb\/111506_holepunch\">https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/grb\/111506_holepunch<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/weather\/2020\/11\/25\/what-is-a-hole-punch-cloud\">https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/weather\/2020\/11\/25\/what-is-a-hole-punch-cloud<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fallstreak_hole\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fallstreak_hole <\/a>\u00a0\u00a0I have been told by Indigenous Pueblo people where I live in New Mexico that they traditionally believe\u00a0 moisture from the clouds in the form of rain, snow, etc. is the ancestors coming to visit. If you think about it, when we pass on, the moisture which comprises nearly 70% of the adult human body, evaporates into the atmosphere and to some degree becomes part of the life cycle that includes the formation of clouds.
