in Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In September 2016, Earth Walks traveled to the spectacular Canyon de Chelly with 12 participants. \u00a0It was a deeply memorable time, which included camping in the canyon under a blanket of stars, Dine (Navajo) friend and guide Daniel Staley playing his beautiful flute music to the echoes of the notes and his \u00a0ancestors and a day of service on the family farm of Kathryn Pemala. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Canyon-de-Chelly-participants-2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" canyon campsite was on Daniel&#8217;s grandparents&#8217; land where he maintains a fruit orchard and a traditional hogan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Daniel-with-apples-Canyon-de-Ch-2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-599\" around the campfire with Daniel playing his flute and singing traditional Dine chants in his native language. \u00a0One participant had just acquired her first drum and she sent it around the group, asking each person to add their own drum beat, song or words to empower it for future drumming. \u00a0The group spent a day of solitude near the powerful Spider Rock. \u00a0That evening the group participated in a traditional sweat lodge.<a href=\"https:\/\/earthwalks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Spider-Rock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Our final day in the canyon was spent in a service activity on the family farm of Kathryn Pemala, long time weaver, who has lived her entire life in the canyon. \u00a0As she weaves, she hears the voices and stories of her ancestors which are woven into the fabric of her work.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_550\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a weeds and enjoyed conversation with Kathryn and family members. \u00a0It was all too soon that we had to leave.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_603\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption 2017. \u00a0We will also travel to Chaco Canyon, NM<a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/353\">\u00a0http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/353<\/a>\u00a0in late May. \u00a0This coming spring, we will be based at Bodhi Manda Zen Center in Jemez Springs, NM\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmzc.org\/\">http:\/\/www.bmzc.org\/<\/a>\u00a0helping with an organic farm in Jemez Pueblo\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jemezpueblo.com\/\">http:\/\/www.jemezpueblo.com\/<\/a>\u00a0 as well as making traditional flutes with Pueblo resident Marlon Magdalena\u00a0<a
